Aspiring Psychologist - Therapist – Psychology Sociology

An opportunity at a remarkable Special Education Needs (SEN) school has arisen for a team of learning support assistants to gain experience working with young people in an educational and therapeutic setting.

This well-established special school and 6th Form supports up to 160 students aged between 11 to 19 years old, in classes of up to 12 individuals, supported by a teacher and one or more teaching assistants.

THE PUPILS:

All pupils have complex learning & additional needs (LAN) and all are supported by an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), where needs include global developmental delay, autism, ADHD / ODD/ADD, anxiety, OCD, sleep apnoea, cerebral palsy, visual or hearing impairment, dyspraxia/coordination difficulties, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, Down syndrome, and speech, language & communication difficulties. The majority of students join us are operating at least 4 to 6 years below chronological expectations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Older pupils have opportunities to do work experience and attend college as part of their educational offer. For example, some pupils are working in hotels, supermarkets and food outlets, and others are following courses in hair and beauty, and engineering at a local college.

Tutor groups all share a common theme for the week using resources prepared to stimulate discussion and grow understanding around a range of issues. This may include issues and events in the community and wider world, where themes may cover commemoration events and national awareness raising campaigns (e.g. Down Syndrome, ASD, Jeans for Genes), and provide opportunities for fund-raising for nominated charities.

THE ROLE:

The role would entail supporting a child with needs on a one-to-one basis, assisting them in learning, social skills, understanding concepts, encouraging communication, ensuring they feel comfortable and safe, and motivating them to achieve.

The role would include supporting children during social activities, outings, and sports events, and helping them during therapy sessions, as well as supporting the teacher in the classroom and playground.

HOURS: Monday to Friday from 08h30 to 15h30 (school term time)

PAY: £98 to £105 per day (including holiday pay)
